“Redfern is located in the inner-city of Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia. Redfern is situated 3 kilometres south of the Sydney central business district and is part of the local government area of the City of Sydney. The population of Redfern was 3,839 at the 2016 census.
Redfern has a long and rich history. It was first settled in 1788 by emancipated convicts, who were given land in the area to build their own homes. In 1816, an Irishman named James Ruse established Australia’s first successful farm in Redfern. The suburb’s name is thought to have come from a comment made by Frederick Law Olmsted, who visited Sydney in 1865 and described the area as “red Fern”.
