“Hurstville is a suburb of Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia. Hurstville is located 16 kilometres south of the Sydney central business district, in the St George area.
The population of Hurstville was 23,664 as at the 2016 census. Hurstville is a major centre for the Islamic community in Sydney and has one of the largest mosques in Australia. Hurstville is also home to a large number of Chinese people, making it one of the most multicultural suburbs in Sydney.
Hurstville is part of the St George local government area. The first European settler in the area was Dr William Heath who built his home, “The Hermitage”, in 1835. Hurstville was originally known as Browns Forest after Joseph Brown who settled there in 1838. The name Hurstville was adopted in 1880 after a local landowner, James Hurst Davison.
Hurstville has a number of surrounding suburbs, including Mortdale, Oatley, Beverly Hills and Penshurst.”
