“Newport is located in the suburb of Newport, New South Wales, Australia. The population of Newport was 9,788 at the 2016 census. The suburb is within the local government area of the City of Sydney.
The first inhabitants of the area were the Cadigal people who belonged to the Dharug language group. In 1792, Newport was named after Admiral Lord Nicholas Richard Howe who was First Lord of the Admiralty at the time. The land was granted to Howe as a reward for his service during the American Revolution.
